Nearly 45 years ago, Ralph Stogdill in Handbook of Leadership: A Survey of Theory and Research stated “there are almost as many different definitions of leadership as there are persons who have attempted to define the concept.” There are also a multitude of leadership models and theories of leadership. Most of these models and theories are trait-based, emotional-based and personality-based and/or behavioral-based. All of these theories and solutions have their place and we use many of them here are Leadership Peaks. However our fundamental overarching theory is that leadership is fundamentally rooted in credibility as well as character. Therefore we recognize the strengths and weaknesses of other models and solutions and seek to help leaders find the gaps, blindspots and tripping points along their leadership journey and help them develop improved habits, attitudes, actions...etc. that positively impact the organization. When designing leadership solutions we have seen that leadership can be represented as a triangle, quadrant or even as a circle in order to demonstrate these gaps and blindspots. Leadership can also be represented as a series of peaks and valleys that you travel along in your leadership journey. Some of these peaks we can conquer easily and other peaks we struggle with. Leadership is a journey that we never truly arrive at but continually strive as we take others along with us and then we eventually pass the torch to those who can continue the journey we began.
