How to Balance Work and Life Around the Holidays

Christmas has approached fast and everyone is in the midst holiday shopping and preparation. During this rush, everyone must still balance work and home life to make sure they are prepared for the holiday. Keeping this balance can be very hard. It is often said that the holidays are one of the most stressful times to be a small business owner. To help you with this balance, we have created a list of how to balance work and life around the holidays.

The first thing you want to do is make a list of things that need to be done at home before the holidays. You'll want to prioritize the list as must do and want to do. If you can get everything on the must do list completed, you will feel a sense of accomplishment. After that, take a break and you will feel instantly reenergized to do the want to do list. You'll also want to keep the work and home duties separate. Don't jump on the web to holiday shop while at the office. On the other hand, when you're at home, don't check your work email and designate lots of quality time with the family for holiday activities such as making holiday cards or putting the tree up.

Another way to keep things balanced during the holidays is to remember to say no. You can prioritize your tasks and politely decline those invitations to gift exchanges and holiday parties. If it is going to put you behind in work or make you lose out on quality family time, remember that a polite decline is perfectly fine. If you have to travel for the holidays, designate a go-to person at the office that is experienced enough to handle any problems that may come up. Be sure to book flights and hotels in advance. If you are traveling with kids, be sure to have a plethora of activities to keep them entertained on the plane or in the car. 

Though it seems counter-intuitive, our last tip is to put more hours in at the office. Buckling down and finishing things before deadlines can free you up and allow the opportunity to leave the office early.
